Application Information

Students in 9th, 10th or 11th grade during the 2020-2021 school year.

We are looking for students who are passionate about making the world a better place and interested in exploring engineering as a way to make change happen.

These characteristics should be apparent in your essays and transcript. While grades are not the only criteria for admission, many students earn B or higher in Math and English classes. If you have lower grades, we suggest asking a teacher to write a recommendation letter to explain how you have grown in your class work. We are looking for hard-working, creative and curious students with or without prior experience in engineering.

All application materials are submitted though the online application.

Course Choice: Choose your first and second choice of courses (Summer STEM 2021 course list). We make every attempt to place students in their first choice. Selecting two courses increase your chances of being place in the course.

Transcript: A complete copy of your most current transcript must be submitted as part of your application. This transcript must contain ALL courses and grades earned while in high school including the current or most recent term.

An official or unofficial copy of your transcript should be uploaded as a pdf through the application website.

Letter of Recommendation: A letter of recommendation is optional for 2021. You provide the name, email and phone number for your reference on the application.

An email is sent to your reference. Please confirm that they received the email recommendation letter request. Recommendations are uploaded online only.

1. Students at The Cooper Union work to address the critical challenges of our time. What is a current problem that you think could be solved through engineering? Why are you inspired to address this problem? (300-500 words)

2. Please tell us about something you do or did outside of school that makes you proud and why it makes you feel that way. (200 words or less)

Extracurricular activities: List any activities that you do outside of school hours. You can also include a link to a resume.

Financial Aid: Complete the financial aid form and upload a copy of your parent/guardian’s most recent W-2 or similar form.

Your application will be reviewed by the STEM Outreach Program Admissions Committee. You will be notified by email about your acceptance and class placement. We ask that you do not accept our offer unless you are certain you want to attend and are able to be present for every day of your session.

  • Founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art offers education in art, architecture and engineering, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences.

  • “My feelings, my desires, my hopes, embrace humanity throughout the world,” Peter Cooper proclaimed in a speech in 1853. He looked forward to a time when, “knowledge shall cover the earth as waters cover the great deep.”

  • From its beginnings, Cooper Union was a unique institution, dedicated to founder Peter Cooper's proposition that education is the key not only to personal prosperity but to civic virtue and harmony.

  • Peter Cooper wanted his graduates to acquire the technical mastery and entrepreneurial skills, enrich their intellects and spark their creativity, and develop a sense of social justice that would translate into action.
